This Wednesday I’ll share some of my kids’ favorite words.
Once upon a time we memorized the riddles from The Hobbit. Well, we’ve been getting morning time done, and that includes memorization. I have the riddles slated to review once a week, but we’ve done them daily, per the children’s request. This is one I hear quite often (in a Gollum voice):
This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.
I love Tolkien. (We also memorized the answer, but I’ve omitted that part…)
Oh, its a good thing I’m not Bilbo! I’m terrible with riddles and jokes and don’t recall the answer to this one. Time? There are some fantastic images here. Thanks for sharing.
Well you’d have earned yourself a guide – it is time. 🙂
My children walk around quoting The Hobbit quite often, too. We love Tolkien, too. He is definitely a favorite at our house.
How fun! We have memorized lots from The Hobbit and LotR and it has been so much fun! Tolkien’s words have so much depth and power.
I love it…last year when ds decided “I refuse to do poetry work any more!” I offered instead to let him memorize all the songs and riddles from Tolkien and he was thrilled…half way through the year he says “hey this IS poetry!” …yup moms are “Sneaky little hobbitses”.
I love this idea! 🙂 Silly question… but did you find the riddles all in one place? Off to Google it… 🙂
I typed them from the book. 🙂
Ha! I guess you did find them in one place. 😛 Can you even believe we don’t own the book yet!? Something I hope to remedy soon! 🙂 We have LOTR but no Hobbit. 🙁
Such a great idea!
